Free, open-source Claude Code mod

A pixel creature that lives in your Claude Code.

Know what Claude is doing without reading a line. A tiny pixel companion swims while Claude works, fills up with your context, rises with your usage limit, and leaves litter until you commit.

Above the prompt, by default.

What it shows

A Claude Code statusline you can read at a glance.

The facts a statusline gives you, drawn as one pixel creature above the prompt.

Context window use

The creature fills from the belly up, one pixel row per tenth of your context window, and changes colour as it fills. Beside it: tokens used against the session's limit, as /context counts them, and a breakdown by system prompt, tools, MCP, memory, skills and messages. Press c to hide it.

Five-hour usage limit and weekly window

The whale swims higher as you use your five-hour limit and reaches the surface at 100%; over clawd, the moon crosses the sky and sets. Every rate-limit window is listed with its percentage and reset time. Limits need a Claude subscription: an API key doesn't report them.

Turn state: thinking, tool use, responding

Each turn has its own motion. The whale sounds sonar while Claude thinks, swims hard with a bubble for every tool call, and spouts while it answers. Clawd blinks, waves its wand, then skates. You can tell what Claude is doing from the corner of your eye.

Uncommitted git work

Seagrass and litter gather on the floor while you have uncommitted changes, and a commit sweeps it clean. Folder, branch and model sit beside the creature. PixBar runs git status every five seconds, never on every frame, and makes no network calls.

Use

A handful of commands, all optional.

/pixbarThe menu: your theme and layout, and the command to change each.
/pixbar theme clawdSwitch to clawd. Kept for your next session.
/pixbar theme whaleBack to the whale.
/pixbar layout paneMove it into a pane beside the transcript, for this session. placement in /config makes it stick.
/pixbar layout bandBack above the prompt.
cShow or hide the context-window breakdown.
/pluginUpdate, disable or remove the mod.

Questions

The short answers.

What is a Claude Code mod?

A Claude Code plugin that draws inside the terminal. It installs from a plugin marketplace with /plugin, like any other plugin; PixBar's marketplace is ke11/claude-mods.

Is PixBar a Claude Code statusline?

It does a statusline's job: context, usage limits, model, branch and git, always in view. A statusline is a line of text under the prompt; PixBar is a mod that draws a small scene above it instead. It doesn't touch your statusLine setting, so you can keep both.

I can't see the creature.

Almost always folder trust: Claude Code loads no mods in a folder it hasn't been told to trust. Answer yes when it asks, then start a new session. Check that /plugin lists pixbar as enabled.

Does it slow Claude Code down?

Barely. In the band the scene is 54 by 10 cells, redrawn ten times a second by one small function. git status runs every five seconds, never on every frame.

Does it send anything anywhere?

No. It reads what Claude Code already shows it and your local git status. No account, no network calls.

What if I use an API key?

Everything works except the five-hour and weekly meters: Claude Code only reports rate-limit windows on a Claude subscription. Without them the column says so, and the whale rests on the seabed.

How do I remove it?

Open /plugin, pick PixBar and uninstall. If you changed the theme, a one-line ~/.claude/pixbar/active file stays behind; delete it if you like.
